VDA Viscoelastic Diverting Acid System

The VDA system is gelled acid system that overcomes some of the traditional problems encountered when trying to increase the viscosity of mineral acid stimulation treatments, reduce frictional pressures and the high cost of obtaining a crosslinked live acid fluid system and provide a means for in diversion to untreated sections of the formation. VDA provides ample retardation and helps prevent excessive leak-off through wormholes. VDA system functions by in-situ crosslink of the polymer, this occurs as the acid spends the pH of the fluid increases causing the polymer to complex, when the fluid completely spends the fluid system breaks back to very low viscosity fluid.

    VDA Viscoelastic Diverting Acid System

    VDA provides an efficient way to help in controlling fluid loss and directing the acid stimulation treatment across the fracture face. The SDA system has application in fracture acidizing of carbonates and dolomite formations and is also effective in enhancing matrix acidizing treatment results.

    VDA System Components

    GA — Gelling Agent (Crosslinkable polymer) XL — Crosslinker

    BS — Buffer Stabilizer

    Breaker — Breaker Aid and Iron Control

    GA — is a synthetic polymer gelling agent used to gel 1 to 28% Hydrochloric Acid and can be pre-mixed or ran on the fly. Typical concentrations of GA are 20.0 gal/Mgal but can be range from 10.0 to 30.0 gal/Mgal depending upon the temperature and down hole conditions. Unlike other acid gelling agents, GA does not form insoluble residue when the gelled acid “breaks” as the acid spends and pH increases. GA will provide greater formation penetration and superior fines suspension due to the temperature viscosity stability.

    CK — is a metal crosslinker used to crosslink the GA polymer as the acid spends. CK crosslinker is generally used at a concentration of the 1.0 to 4.0 gal/Mgal. The concentration is dependent upon the AG concentration and the type of crude oil that it may come in contact with. If the CK concentration is decreased, the breaker material must also be reduced. Things to consider when using CK are hydrogen sulfide will prevent the material from crosslinking and should be avoided. Avoid other iron control additives such as reducers or chelants.

    BS — is buffer additive use to help stabilize and maintain the crosslink pH as long as possible. The inclusion of the ST also will help in smoother break profile of the crosslink polymer. Typical concentration of ST is 1.0 to 2.0 gal/Mgal.

    Breaker — is used in the SDA system as a breaker aid to help in breaking the crosslink in cases where the temperature is low or in dolomite formations where the acid may be slow to spend to pH above 4.0. The typical concentrations of the Breaker are 4.0 lb/Mgal. If the VDA system is batch mixed and the acid is allowed to set for more than a couple of hours prior to pumping a additional amount of the Breaker will need to be required.
